God's Billboards:
Not About the God of the Bible
The word of God
is very pure and precious in the sight of the Lord. The Bible tells us that
God magnifies his word above his name:
"...for thou hast magnified thy word above
all thy name." Psalm 138:2
The stories in the Holy Bible are not tales
written by men. The Bible, which is filled with historical accounts of the
marvelous works of the LORD, is the very word of God:
"... when ye received the word of God which
ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in
truth, the word of God..." 1 Thessalonians 2:13
Satan's followers have always perverted and
blasphemed the word of God, but why are Christians choosing to hold the
truth in unrighteousness by doing the same thing? Why are those who claim to be
born again into the family of God producing and enjoying ludicrous spins on the wondrous works
of God and the doctrines of Jesus Christ? The trivialization and playful debasement of the
word of God and his precepts is called Christian humor.
Believers of our day have been conditioned to
think that deriving pleasure from irreverent plays on Bible stories and Bible
doctrine is a
normal part of the Christian life. To the contrary; it is an abomination. That
which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God." (See Luke
16:15)
God's Billboards Present a
"God" of Levity, a Good Ol' Boy
My first citation of ungodly humor
is mild compared to what is currently being enjoyed by those who name the name
of Jesus Christ.
A forum moderator
who posts in a distinct Rapture Ready style and avidly
promotes modern Bible versions, defended God's Billboards (1) and challenged me to point out what is wrong with
such humor. It follows that one who believes
God's word comes in many flavors (from sharp to mild) is unable to discern
obvious misrepresentations of God's character.
Below are examples of actual billboards that
have been erected on roadsides across the United States:
• What part of "Thou shalt not..." don't
you understand? -God
God is presented as speaking like a common
sinner who uses sarcasm to get his point across.
• Keep using my name in vain, I'll make rush hour longer. -God
Satan is behind the minimization of the
severity of the sin of using God's name as an epithet. Exodus 20:7 warns: Thou
shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold
him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
• Big bang theory, you've got to be kidding. -God
God does not jest about the satanic doctrine of
evolution that has sent untold millions to hell...but Satan does.
• Don't make me come down there. -God
More worldly sarcasm is presented as coming
from the mouth of God, who is threatening to come down to earth if its
inhabitants don't behave.
• You think it's hot here? -God
God does not hint or joke about hell. He directly warns
about terror of hell and sent his Son,
the Lord Jesus Christ, to die on the cross and rise again to prevent people
from going there.
The moderator responded in
typical Rapture-Ready
fashion:
Is it lonely being the only true prophet of
God?
My response:
It is going to be lonely in outer darkness
for those who mock God in the guise of humor.
Another moderator remarked:
I do think well, they [God's Billboards] make the things of
God sound...TRITE...
I remember seeing them as an unbeliever reading the one that said...
"Don't make me come down there: God"
and thinking YEAH RIGHT!
I do think unbelievers have to hear the word of God.
If Christians appear not to take God too
seriously why will unbelievers?
This is a crucial point. Humor of the God's
Billboards kind influences unbelievers to not take God seriously. They
will not come under conviction by reading slogans of a "God" who is
not set apart from sinners in his manner of speech. Casual, flippant, off-the-cuff
comments do not come from the mouth of the God of the Bible. (These billboards reflect the way God is
portrayed in certain modern bible versions.)
The God's Billboards do not witness the truth
about God.
May those who endorse the "God's billboards"
campaign realize that these
billboards do not accurately "advertise" the Holy God of the Holy Bible. The
true God inspires
holy awe and conviction of sin and his words accomplish the same.
